Sydney (SYD) Airport’s total passenger traffic in June 2022 was down 24.6 per cent on the same period in 2019, however total passenger numbers last month recorded a whopping 75.1 per cent increase on June 2021 domestic and international travellers.
Australia’s busiest airport was down 10.6 per cent on domestic traveller numbers for June 2022 compared to June 2019 and 47.1 per cent down on international travellers against the same pre-pandemic period.
The latest SYD traffic performance report shows year-on-year total passenger numbers are tracking up on June 2021 levels with almost double the amount of travellers in June 2022 (7,838 vs 13,722).
It’s an upwards trend that saw 46 per cent more domestic travellers through the airport last month compared to June 2021, and a massive 450.3 per cent of international travellers with 563,000 overseas passengers in June 2022 compared to just 3,100 in June 2021.
As travel ramps up, airports and airlines in Australia and overseas are struggling to meet demand amid a decimated workforce and supply chain issues that are resulting in chaotic scenes during the ongoing June –July winter holiday season.
Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert said: “The increasing demand for travel is encouraging but it’s clearly creating challenges for an industry that is still trying to rebuild operationally.”
“With the June long weekend and school holiday peak behind us, we will continue to work on our operational recovery alongside our airline partners and each of the 800 organisations across the airport.”
