In golf, links courses are the oldest and most prized places to tee off, and Ireland has a quarter of all natural links.
The natural curves of the Irish coastline, carved for millennia by the waves and wind of the Atlantic make for quite simply the finest gold courses in the world.
And this is official! The golf course at Royal County Down regularly tops the Golf Digest list of 100 Courses in the World outside of the US.
With championship courses from north to south and the return of The Open is set to return to Ireland again in 2019. The course at Royal Portrush will host golfing’s most prestigiousm event for a historic second time.
Ireland is bucket-list golfing for anyone who takes the sport seriously.
The northern courses
There is an incredible collection of world-class courses to the north of Ireland from the challenging coastal course of Ardglass that will distract you with the stunning views of the Irish Sea to the world’s number one course at Royal County Down – a course of such beauty and difficulty that golfing greats return again and again to try to beat it.
And when you are done golfing, this is where they filme the HBO series Game of Thrones so you can cycle the coast made famous as Westeros.
The best in the world
When you have the best courses in the world it makes sense that you produce the world’s best players, and Ireland has more than its fair share of golfing greats.
Rory McIlroy won four majors by the age of 26, Darren Clarke has captained Team Europe, and Paul McGinley the first Irishman to captain the Ryder Cup. Follow in the footstps of golf’s giants when you step up to an Irish course.
The 19th hole
When the golfing is done you have to make your way to the mythical 19th, which really refers to anywhere you want to spend your post-golf time.
If it’s pubs you love then you will walk into an Irish pub with strangers and leave with your new best friends. If you fancy more walking you can hike the Causeway Coastal Route and visit the Giant’s Causeway and the Bushmills Whisky Distillery.
